The idea of making work on a handkerchief invites a process of inspiration that takes in fashion, crafting, high society and folk art. The works in this show reflect these histories of usage, and many draw on their use as items of courtship and fancy. Though the handkerchief may today have lost its currency as an essential everyday accessory, it’s ability to draw on these histories as tokens or signs in our contemporary awareness is still very much present.
